Most Australian's love a good BBQ and now it seems this passion is being spread around the world by Aussie's living and working abroad. The humble BBQ may indeed be a defining social and culinary element of the Australian lifestyle if our overseas Aussies have anything to do with it. It seems as soon as a BBQ is fired up Aussies flock.
This seemed to be the case on Anzac day in New York City when the Magpies' (an American AFL Team) held their annual Anzac Day event. It attracts many Aussies each year and although they are there to honor our Anzacs another draw card had to be an afternoon filled with beer, music, fellow Aussies and BBQ's. Hundreds of expats are lured by the BBQ lunch each year.
But New York isn't the only international city to get a taste of the Australian lifestyle. It seems the Aussie BBQ is a seasoned traveler with its most recent trip being to Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan. Our Australian soldiers have been missing "Aussie food" so much that BBQ's were held on a regular basis. But the desire for the cuisine of home has increased and the Australian Defense Force has now started a million plan to build Aussie styled kitchens with Aussie Cooks and more Aussie food.
Never underestimate the power of a BBQ. They can bring people together in the most unexpected of places. Next time you're overseas why not have a BBQ in honor of home. You may be amazed who turns up.
